about Charles D. Test

A Brief Personal History of CDT

Born May 1956

Charles Davol Test was born to Sarah Davol Test and Dr. Charles Edward Test in Indianapolis, Indiana. Depending on the person I’ve been known as Charles, Charlie, Chas, Chuck.

Mom was born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts and Dad was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. My lineage of Tests came from Pennsylvania Quakers and settled in Indiana in the early 1800s. Davols have been in Massachusetts for hundreds of years originally getting chased out of France for religious reasons. My grandfather Charles Dean Davol was very interested in history and was active in the Fall River Historical Society. He researched the DAVOL Family history back to the Pilgrims.
I grew up in Indianapolis going to PS 86 for grades 1 – 8 and Park-Tudor School for high school. Upon graduation from high school I headed to Minneapolis, Minnesota to attend the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. I graduated in 1978. I pursued painting, sculpture and inter-media. My senior art piece involved time, space and spectrum light.

After art school I worked as a handyman and carpenter. Eventually this led me to start buying rental properties that needed fixing up. I also helped to research the Minneapolis Armory for preservation and the Minneapolis City Hall for its centennial book. Marriage, divorce and helping many stray cats have been part of these years too.

A side effect of my research was collecting local history. Collecting postcards and old photographs, primarily of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. It’s a way to find documentation for various Joralemon buildings. Today finds me creating this web site to share my research and collection with the world.
