Oldsmobile’s 324 Rocket V-8 with a single four-barrel carburetor was boosted to 250 horsepower for the F-88; the engine was mated to a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. The engine’s compression ratio was pushed higher (to 10:1) than the stock 185hp 324 that came in an Olds Eighty-Eight or Ninety-Eight and a label on the fuel filler cap specified that 94-to-100-octane fuel be used. Writers for Motor Life magazine (April 1954) speculated that the top speed of the experimental car would be approximately 150mph.

When the 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 sold at Barrett-Jackson/Scottsdale several years ago, it created quite a stir among enthusiasts. Some believed it was the car shown on the 1954 GM Motorama circuit. In reality, it is not. It was not even completed by GM! This is what I call the fourth or three built. A body with its doors not even cut out along with enough parts to complete the car (with the exception of a Corvette frame and an engine/transmission) was sent to E.L. Cord of Cord automobile fame. He never built the car and it was subsequently owned by many individuals over the years until it was finally put together in the early 1990s. The pictured car is the third F-88; it was built for GM executive, Sherrod Skinner. Does it still exist?

1954 Oldsmobile F-88 Convertible Concept Car In 1954 the F-88 was a Motorama “Dream Car” and was one of only two complete – with an unconfirmed possible two ‘shells’ – ever created. The F-88 presented here is literally the only car left of its kind and was acquired by the Hendricks Collection at the prestigious Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona for an auction record $3,240,000. After spending decades as a collection of parts stored in wooden crates, the F-88 was painstakingly reassembled and offered for sale at the 2007 auction. This acquisition made automotive history and is the “cornerstone” of the Gateway Colorado Automobile Museum. This groundbreaking design and legendary story is displayed in its own special room with a rotating display and period documentation worthy of the F-88!
